RIPLEY, N.Y. — A 16-year-old Ripley resident died Thursday night as a result of injuries he suffered when he was struck by a CSX train at the Goodrich Street rail crossing.

The boy — whose name was not being released this morning — and a group of other teens were walking south on Goodrich Street at about 9 p.m. Thursday when the warning lights and bells at the ungated rail crossing were activated, according to a press release from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

The teens still attempted to cross the tracks and the 16-year-old was struck by the westbound CSX train, according to the press release.

The boy was taken to Westfield Hospital, where he died a short time later, deputies said.

The incident is under investigation.

From talking to the kids in the deal, (I know the family) they were playing chicken with the train. Of course this so far is hear say.

Sometimes I think it is an absolute miricle that teens manage to become adults. They (and I am including myself as a teen) can be so common sense challenged (it's not really stupidity - teens just think they are invincible) and do the stupidest things.

Between the video games, movies and television, it's a wonder that kids and young adults have ANY common sense.  I think it goes back to the 60's, when 'live' TV reports came into being.  We were regaled on a nightly basis with reports from Viet Nam of all the atrocities and violence as we ate dinner, and soon became numb to it.  Children see guns and violence portrayed, and think it's not real, because their favorite character that was shot last week, is fine and dandy the next.

I did not give my sons toy guns, simply for the fact that I did not want them confusing the toys with the real things.  When they were of proper age, they were taught gun safety and awareness.  Then, I also taught my kids to think BEFORE they did something, and to trust their guts that if something didn't feel like a good idea, it probably wasn't.  It's sad that this younger generation wasn't taught morals and values, and it's our fault as parents for being too lenient.  Whenever my kids left the house, I wanted to know who, what, where, when, why and for how long.  I was told by another mom that I was the strictest parent she knew, and I thanked her.  I believe that lack of parental involvement is what has brought this generation to the point it's at today.  Parents would rather hand their kids $20 or more, and tell them to go amuse themselves.  There's no follow-through, and no consequences for bad behavior.  The government has gone to the extreme with the hands-off policy, causing parents to fear retribution if they look at their kids cross-eyed.

I'm not advocating violence and abuse, mind you.  Children need to be protected from harm, but also need limits, boundaries and consequences.  If something isn't done to stem the tide of anarchy in this country, I fear for the future.  After all, this is the generation who will be making the decisions that affect ALL of us in the near future.  THAT is scary.

My son was not allowed to have toy guns when he was small. His father kept loaded guns in the house and I did not want him confused. When his grandmother (not my mother) gave him toy guns (she thought every little boy should have toy guns and had absolutely no respect for my wishes) they managed to get broken the very first day. Also, cartoons like Road Runner, Bugs Bunny and the like were banned from our house for all my kids and now grandkids. If the show depicted animals or people getting hurt and then walking away they could not watch it. There is enough violence in the world, kids do not have to see it in their cartoons.
