There are approximately 200 different species of mosquitoes in the United States --all of which live in specific habitats, exhibit unique behaviors, and bite different types of animals. Mosquitoes are insects that have been around for hundreds of years. During this time, they have been honing their skills so that they are now experts at finding people to bite. A mosquito has a battery of sensors designed to track there prey, including chemical, visual, and heat sensors. Sweat, clothing that contrasts with a background and heat attract mosquitoes. Be aware of these sensors in order to protect yourself and your pet. Mosquito Life Cycle Like all insects, mosquitoes hatch from eggs and go through several stages in their life cycle before becoming adults. The females lay their eggs in water and the larval and pupal stages live entirely in water. When the pupas change into adults, they leave the water and become free-flying land insects. The life cycle of a mosquito can vary from one to several weeks depending upon the species. Female mosquitoes bite animals and humans and feed on their blood, which provides proteins that they need to lay more eggs. Females continue this cycle and live anywhere from days to weeks whereas males usually live only a few days after mating. Protecting Your Pet A flea and tick drop prevents mosquitoes from biting your dog. To prevent mosquitoes from entering your home, make sure that all of your window screens are intact.
