I am starting to believe that my little roly poly girl has a thyroid problem or another problem. Every time we go to the vet she gains weight, even if it is only a few ounces. She is up to 19.6, and the vet wants her at 16 or 17 lbs, no more. So, we are having some bloodwork done this weekend. The results will be back on Monday. If that doesn't show a problem, we will have to switch her to a super low cal prescription food until we get her where we want her, and then a manitenance formula to maintain the weight. I know that prescription foods aren't the best, but I have to do something. Especially with all of the wiring in her knee now, I can't risk her reinjuring the knee and needing surgery again.... So, she will either be on medicine or special food.... My poor starving girl.... Last edited on Wed May 7th, 2008 04:24 pm by Joanne |

Dora, Dora.......pugs and weight issues, like that's a new one...LMAOOOO Ya definatley don't want her to cause more problems to her knee. Let us know what the vet says....Fingers are crossed here for you that it is only a weight problem and not a health problem. GOOD LUCK!!

Robin, this is just not an overweight dog... Jess has been telling me for years that I am starving her. I can't feed her less than she is getting, and she is plenty active. I am just at a loss... When I brought her in for a weigh in a few weeks ago I was stunned that she was up to 19.6...and that was after cutting out all treats (we use a single piece of kibble for a treat)... I just want to get an answer so she is not starving all the time. She eats her food, licks the bowl for a few minutes, goes and licks Brutus's bowl, then goes back to her bowl.... it's just not normal...

Sounds like Maddy, we just had a thyroid done on her and it came back normal and she weighs 30lbs. The dr mentioned a diet type pill for dogs now and I wasn't gonna put crap in her body, it is getting to the point I may have NO choice. Maddy only eats her breakfast and a few pieces of orange before bed and she is still gaining with no apparent reason. I am thinking that it has to do with the past winter months but now that she is so damn fat we can't take very long walks because her legs can't support her.

I empathize with poor Dora. I too have thyroid issues. It's one of the easiest illnesses to diagnose and treat, yet so many people are being ignored by the so-called medical 'professionals', or misdiagnosed. There is controversy over what the 'normal' range for the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) should be, even among the testing labs. Most are going by standards that are six years old, so patients are not being treated, or being under-medicated. The new standard range is below .30 and above 3.0. Anything below is considered hyperthroid, and above is hypothyroid. When your doctor tells you that your thyroid is 'normal', ask him for the numbers, and mention the new (2002) standards, and see which he/she uses as a guideline. It's well worth the time, believe me. I went mis/underdiagnosed for years, then went on Levothyroxine six months ago. I'm finally feeling human again.

Remind me to bring you a pack of Depends for the future. I know the bloodwork is for the dog; I'm just imparting knowledge for the doggy-moms and dads. Sheesh!!!
